Hello - apologies if my terminology in't quite up to scratch etc, but I'm all rather new to cycling.
Out on a ride in the week and something has gone wrong with the gears on the back wheel (the cassette?). Trying to change down halfway up a hill and the gears will click a little, the chain will eventually move to the next cog and then drop immediately to the cog it was on before (i.e. no gear change).
Helpful for forcing me to attack hill in a high gear, but not good for keeping my motivation going!
Any obvious thing which it could be? Any decent source of advice out there - either here, or elsewhere on line, which I can follow to track down / fix the problem?

Sounds like the rear derailleur needs it's cable tension adjusted. Here's a link to Park Tool's instructions for adjusting the rear derailleur. The Park Tools site is great for finding how to repair, adjust, and/or maintain just about anything on your bike.

Sure... the rear cassette cable needs to be adjusted every now and then. They stretch, causing the tension to slacked up. It's dead easy to correct... there is a square plastic spindle, or metal tumbler spindle at the end of the cable that you turn to adjust that. My advic is, take it to a bike shop or an exprinced cyclist and get them to show you how to tune your own gears. It's easy, and you won't get that annoying clicking any more... that's the sound it makes when it needs tuning.
