GEELONG looks set to host the 2010 world road cycling championships, following reports that Bahrain has withdrawn from the bidding.

World governing body the UCI will announce the host next Tuesday night after a meeting in Stuttgart, Germany, the venue for this month's world road titles.

The Advertiser reported last month that Geelong was hot favourite to host the titles after the race reportedly narrowed to Australia or Bahrain, with Australia the clear favourite. Reports said that should Australia be chosen, Geelong would get the nod.

Reports in Bahrain newspaper the Gulf Daily News said the bid managers had pulled out because of a lack of local financial support.

A Cycling Australia spokesperson declined to comment ahead of Tuesday night's announcement.

Earlier this year International Cycling Union (UCI) officials were in Geelong to go over a prospective route with City of Greater Geelong officials and Cycling Australia representatives.

It is believed the course would be similar to that used in UCI women's World Cup races in Geelong, including elements of the waterfront, the CBD, Highton, Queens Park and Geelong West.

The titles, which are held over five days, include the men's and women's elite road races and time trials and the men's under-23 road race and time trial. It is, however, believed the time trial events could be held in Melbourne on the course used in last year's Commonwealth Games.

The titles are held annually and must be held outside Europe at least once every seven years.

More than 400 cyclists, representing more than 30 countries, take part.
