Get well

Hi folks

First time post since accident (I have some online access now thanks to Peter & Alan). I am still in hospital and stuck in bed some 5.5 weeks after my crash. Good news is I am on the improve after some dark early days. Hence no blog or forum posts of late. Injuries ended up to be pretty serious with the loss of most of my lower leg muscle fibres.

So after many weeks of fighting, I ended up having to have my lower left leg amputated approx 10cm, BTK. So I will be relearning the whole cycling thing.

I have another week of basic healing before I'll be released to rehab
(Fingers crossed no more complications). But after 7 surgerys, I am
determined to get back on the bike and race my socks (well sock ;) )
off again.

The drugs don't make for forum conversations as I'm still a bit slow
typing! So bear with me. The outlook is bright though - so many new challenges to face, I'll be glad to share my experience through the blog.

Cheers
Alex

Great to hear from you Alex!
Good luck with the rehab - just be patient with things.

Alex,

I'm glad you're still in good spirits. I'll be sure to continue reading your blog when you return to posting.

All the best for you.

Sorry to hear the extent of damage to your leg. I had to read it twice to make sure I wasn't reading it wrong, but I am glad your spirit to ride continues.

Early this season I saw a double amputee at one of our popular ride spots.
I believe it was this guy Scott Rigsby. What an inspiration it was to see him get prepared to train for a triathalon. I doubt I could hold his wheel for more than a few minutes and I am sure when you get back to training many will be trying to catch your wheel, but won't be able too.

Keep your spirit and faith high

that is all very cool, thanks everyone. I wanna lead that team pursuit home for gold again!

:) :)

Great spirit Alex, keep it up! This is the difference b/n winning and losing.

Look forward to hear what tech gadgets you'll have to help you get back to the pedals. It's a whole new world out there. ;)

Amazing courage and determination. Good on ya Alex. ;) You will be living proof for all those who go on about leg strength, and will show them that power is derived from a good heart and lungs (amongst other things) and of course a resolute mindset.

Look forward to hearing about your future rides leaving the opposition in your wake. May you soon be back on the bike. TYSON

Hi Alex,

From a long-time lurker (and reader of many of your posts) - the attitude you've got is truly inspirational. All the very best of good fortune on your journey back to the bike (and the best of success on the many, many kms that you'll be covering on it once you get back in the saddle!).

Cheers,

Rob

Thanks for all the well wishes.

I'm now posting updates on progress on my blog. Link below.

sorry to hear that another member of this community has suffered such bad fortune...i'm always concious that this sort of thing could happen to any one of us any time.

i would just like to tell the story of the time a rider powered past me in a race here in london...with one mighty powerful leg. the power meter was registering well into the 300's.

I later discovered he was a Colombian by the name of Robinson Martinez:

best wishes Alex.

hope everything goes fine wish good luck

Er, thanks. I think this sticky can go now (I'd pretty much forgotten about it). I lost some of my leg but don't need Viagra;)
