Getting buzzed - 18 wheelers

time to give myself ample recovery space to my right, and to encourage the
other driver to either yield my lane or give me more of it. If the driver

On one ride a road crew closed the opposite lane and was directing traffic
in alternate directions using the lane on my half of the road. I was at the
back of a platoon of cars that pulled away from me and cleared the road crew
before I did. The road crew member up ahead of me then directed the opposite
direction traffic into my lane before I could get to the end of the lane
closure. He didn't care that I was still in the narrow lane traveling toward
him.

Since the traffic coming at me was moving slowly, I moved into the center of
the lane and looked straight at the lead driver. He slowed, moved toward the
center of the road, then finally stopped. All the cars behind him stopped. I
then moved to the right edge of the lane and passed the rest of the column
of stopped cars before each successive vehicle in the backup could start
moving again.

If you want more space on the road, sometimes you have to ride like you're
driving a Mack truck yourself.

My dad was an over the road trucker. These guys can't afford bad marks
on their records regarding safety.

Probably nothing will happen to this driver, though I applaud your
stance. As there were no witnesses and no police report, it's a
word-vs.-word situation, and they'll likely back their driver.

That said, unfortunately it sounds like you ran across a couple of
a-holes who knew they could mess with you and get away with it on a
relatively deserted stretch of road.

Sorry to hear it. As you said, most truckers are more trustworthy than
most four-wheel drivers. Their living depends on it.

I don't think it goes something like that at all. People who drive semis
generally are making better money than trailer trash. If it were one of
those white panel trucks -- yeah, maybe. My experience with those is that
the person who is driving them is not a professional driver, and is often
unskilled.

Semi truck drivers generally know what they're doing, and have a vested
interest in not having blots on their safety/driving records. If this guy
was a bad egg, he's not going to be truck driver much longer.

When I lived in Austin, Texas, I saw a pickup truck somebody had made
out of a Ford commercial truck. Like the one in the link you gave, it
had a dual rear axle so that the rear would be about as wide as the
front.

Like most Texas pickup trucks, it was shiny and showed no indication
of having carried any cargo.

It's interesting to see common value judgments turned up one increment
past the familiar range. I bet having to share the road with these
contraptions would get a rise out of even the average scud pilot. I
say bring it on; the sooner we get some public policy against giant
cars, the better.

I asked a simple question because the truck did NOT
