Am buyin my 1 st road bike and have discovered a mine field of contradictory advice and apparently good bikes, think am going to choose from a giant defy 2 or a specialised allez. Am 6 ft 4. The defy 2 is my limit price wise. Please help.Other suggestions also welcome

Test ride them and test ride some others that look interesting and make your choice that way. The choice of a bike, like the choice of a saddle, is highly individual. All of the major bicycle manufacturers make great frames and usually equip them with Shimano, SRAM, or Campaglono components. Often a bicycle choice boils down to the component level on a bike because the ride of bikes that are made of the same material and are meant for the same type of riding are so similar anymore. There currently aren't any bicycle manufacturers that are having quality issues as far as I know, so the field is pretty wide open for you.

I had a 2009 Giant Defy 2 which I bought new and really enjoyed it. Like you, it was my first new road bike and it treated me well as I logged over 10,000 km's in the less than two years I owned it. I would highly recommend it. It has the best compact frame around and the carbon fork is nice and it has a decent drive train and other components, if you are just going for the regular Defy 2 and not the carbon. The carbon runs about 3200-3500 depending where you buy. I liked GIANT so much that I have just gone full carbon and bought the GIANT TCR AVANCED 2, 2011 model. It is a sleek very well equipped bike. My advice, buy reasonable for the first bike, you can always upgrade later....and if you don't like road, you have not invested thousands in a bike. Food for thought....happy shopping!

thanks for your help! Think am going to opt 4 the giant. Even tho it's a bit more money. The fact that the frame is the same on giants means that in the future I can just upgrade components as I go. The ride is also excellent. And the defy seems more comfortable for some1 my size (6ft 4) once again many thanks!

I have a 2009 Giant Defy 1 with all 105 components and I love it. It is also my first road bike.
