I would define a giraffe as any unicycle where the cranks are not attached directly to the hub/axle of the bottom wheel and are positioned directly above it, not of to one side (as in tandem or recumbant unicycles). This would include multi-wheeled unicycles and most chain driven unicycles. Perhaps it should be also added that to qualify as a giraffe, the unicycle must raise one higher than a standard 36" unicycle would, since some chain-driven unicycles are actually far smaller than even the average 20" unicycle.

So a mini-giraffe would not be a giraffe? While this one would? Fine with me but you see that qualification is not trivial.

I am going to include my mini giraffe to the count once I figure out how to tabulate my entry in this thread. The tabulation format keeps changing and I'm confused. 🙁
My definition for a giraffe would be any unicycle where the pedals are above the center of the wheel on the ground. That definition would include the mini giraffes, the multi wheel giraffes, and the traditional chain drive giraffes. It would nix the oddballs like the chaindrive jackshaft geared 36er (it's a chaindrive, but not a giraffe). It would include the big wheel uni in the picture that Klaas posted.
I am so lucky on how i got my giraffe. I was Muni on Mt. Crested Butte in Co and this groundsman wanted to see my unicycle. He gave me his address and phone # and said that he had a giraffe unicycle that was 20 years old and was a shwinn and wanted me to have it because he has never met anyone else that could unicycle. He gave it to me because he could only move his feet an cm up and down and couldnt handle the fall because he broke both of his feet paragliding. well anyway i am in kansas and got my pic in the newspaper for cheering my friend on in a race on it.
