Giro di Lombardia The Giro di Lombardia is a cycling race, in Lombardy, Italy. It is the last 'Monument' of the European calendar, and although no longer part of the UCI ProTour, it is the last event in the UCI World Ranking calendar, and therefore potentially decisive in that title.

History The first edition was 1905. It was then called Milan-Milan. It gained its current name in 1907. The route has changed many times. Milan, Sesto San Giovanni, Bergamo, Varese, Monza, Cuneo have been start or finish place. In 2004 the race started in Mendrisio in Switzerland, and ended in Como. The most famous obstacle is the Madonna del Ghisallo climb that appears in the latter part of the race. A shrine there has a small museum containing religious and cycling objects.

Fausto Coppi won a record five times. Frenchman Henri Pelissier and Irishman Sean Kelly are the only non-Italian riders to win the race three times. The 2009 race was won by Philippe Gilbert. Giro di Lombardia News
Scarponi accepts being second best at Lombardy Italian happy with another placing in final race with Androni Giocattoli. Michele Scarponi has missed out on success in three major races this season but the laid-back Italian still considers 2010 a good year and was satisfied to be the best of the rest, behind Philippe Gilbert at the Tour of Lombardy. The 31-year-old Androni Giocattoli rider lost Tirreno-Adriatico to Stefano Garzelli due to stage placings after the two finished equal on time and he missed out on the podium at the Giro d'Italia by just 13 seconds after losing time to Vincenzo Nibali in the final time trial.

The 34-year-old put in one of his best performances this year, attacking from a group of favourites including Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas-Doimo) and Samuel Sanchez Gonzalez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) in the closing kilometres. Link: http://www.cyclingnews.com/news/lastras-pleased-with-tour-of-lombardy-result Philippe Gilbert wins Giro di Lombardia again Gilbert emerged at the front of the field with Michele Scarponi (Diquigiovanni-Androni) with 30km remaining following a series of attacks by riders including Vladimir Gusev (Katusha), Giovanni Visconti (ISD) and Liquigas’ Vincenzo Nibali over the final 50km of a rain-soaked race near Lake Como in Italy. Gilbert entered the race as a clear favorite, despite a new, longer and more difficult route that benefited the climbers in the peloton. On the day’s final climb, Gilbert moved ahead of Scarponi with about 5km to go and soloed in for his second successive victory in the classic known as “the race of the falling leaves.” Link: http://velonews.competitor.com/2010/10/news/philippe-gilbert-wins-giro-di-lombardia-again_146427
102nd Giro di Lombardia - Gilbert Repeats Philippe Gilbert attacked Michele Scarponi one kilometer from the summit on the final climb of the San Fermo Battaglia with 5 km to go to ride away and win alone at the finish by a margin of 40 seconds on the Italian. The race came down to a battle of two riders when Vincenzo Nibali was dropped after the penultimate climb after he crashed on the descent. Gilbert led on the descent, but Scarponi fought back to join the Belgian leader with 17 km to go. Link: http://www.dailypeloton.com/displayarticle.asp?pk=17779
Gilbert wins Giro di Lombardia Philippe Gilbert held off the challenge of Michele Scarponi to retain his Giro Di Lombardia title in wet and slippery conditions on Saturday. Gilbert finished 12 seconds ahead of Scarponi to take the last major race of the 2010 season.

The Belgian showed at the World Championships with a promising late attack that he is going well. While he was ultimately reeled back on the final flat kilometers in Geelong, Australia, he did manage to get a second win at the Giro del Piemonte in a row. Defending champion Philippe Gilbert told the Gazzetta dello Sport that fellow cyclist Roman Kreuziger recently phoned him to discuss a possible protest. Gilbert said a protest would be "a way to show that cycling is not synonymous with doping, rather that it's actually cleaner than a lot of other (sports), and definitely the sport that has fought against doping the most." No Australian has won the big late-season race, which comes a fortnight after Evans' strong ride at the world championships in Geelong. "Lombardia is one of my favorite one-day races of the year," Evans said. Link: http://news.smh.com.au/breaking-news-sport/evans-cycling-year-winds-up-in-italy-20101015-16ndz.html

Gilbert looks like the man to beat, again. But I wonder how extra kilometers and a climb more will effect his chances.
Nibali, Scarponi, Pozzovivo, Sanchez, D. Martin, Brajkovic, Kolobnev, maybe Evans and Schleck should be there too.
To bad Ricco's not there, but Sella is.

Excellent ride by Gilbert.
He proved he's in best shape, and this time showed dominance first by attacking the group and riding solo, and then attacking Scarponi on climb, although he could easily wait finishing sprint and beat him.
I was little surprised that the group behind Gilbert containing Nibali, Fuglsang, Lastras, Sabchez couldn't organize the chase. Gilbert was constantly gaining time on them from the moment he attacked till the point he was on safe distance.
I'm not sure what was the reason for elbowing between Gilbert and Scarponi on the last climb, but the difference in freshness between the two was huge. Like they didn't ride the same course.
Maybe it was just Scarponi's way to say he can beat Gilbert only if he knocks him down.
Very strong showing from Gilbert.

I saw the result but I have seen the race yet (awaiting highlights).

great win for Gilbert, he's had a superb autumn season and a rather good overall 2010 season too.

Fulsgangs 4th is an excellent result also : this rider is a talent.
