I strongly recommend wristguards rather than gloves.
If you fall forwards off the muni and put your hands out to stop
yourself, you can fold your wrists back, damage tendons, and rip skin
off your palms. I had a very low speed fall on grass a year or so back
and put myself in hospital with a chipped bone - I was wearing gloves.
I also had a small fall off the MUni and landed on concrete with my hand
beneath me and folded my wrist back so far I couldn't hold my sword for
a fortnight. (Titter ye not - I mean my fencing foil.)
I now wear Salomon wristguards, available from any good snowboard shop.
They have a hard plastic "splint" which protects the palm against
abrasion, and the wrist against foldback. I've had some hard falls in
these and so far not hurt my hands or wrists. They cost about 10 GBP
which is prob'ly 15 - 20 US$.
