Good bicycle shops in Melbourne and Giant CRX3?

Hi all.

I am Timofey, nice to read you all.

I've recently moved to Melbourne and I am looking for a bicycle now.
I have two shops nearby: Freedom Machine on Chapel St. and Melbourne
Bicycle Center on High St. in Prahran. Any comments about the shops?
What is your favorite shop?

I am eyeing giant CRX3, but I am worried about its 24H wheelset - looks
fragile. Any comments on this one?
http://www.giant-bicycles.com/au/030.000.000/030.000.000.asp?year=2005&model=9871
And a new '06 model has this... er colour :)

Thanks

how long is a piece of string, think you will hear varying reports..... Melbourne Bicycle Centre is a very low end shop, dont have much experience with it, except to get cheap bits every now and then, they have a few low-mid price range bikes.

Freedom Machine, I bought my first road bike from them Avanti Monza, about 5/6 years ago, was good service, and good servicing, I would have no complaints about them, but I thought they moved or has spin cycle been renamed to Freedom Machine ?

you also have
Swim-Bike-Run http://www.s-b-r.com, Punt Road near St Kilda Junction.
Bike Now http://www.bikenow.com.au, Corner of Park St-Kingsway, South Melbourne

both have

check out Bicycle Recycle

Bicycle Recycle
"They take reasonable condition second-hand bikes and sell new and second-hand bikes.

dont you mean "anything hot/stolen" ? I personally know of 5 separate cases (and heard 2ndhand of a bout a dozen more) of someone getting their steed knocked off, wandering down to 'B-R' and finding their bike sitting, waiting for them.

If 'Tim' is looking for a new LBS relationship i'd lean in this neck of the woods to Bikenow or FM (in portMelb now?)

while ago.

Bike life.. Auburn Rd Hawthorn Service is as good as it gets.. Prices

Yes, that's it. It is on the Freedom's site - they renamed it. Any good this Spin Cycle one?

Thanks, I will visit them as well.

Unless you're totally sure about something like this, it's a bit rich to spewing out such **** on the forum.

I'm probably their best customer, I find this really hard to believe, and I'm ****** off about it.

A "dozen" extra cases? I ****ing doubt it. Sounds like 3rd hand ******** to me.

I dunno when you're talking about, but I very much doubt the current owners would've done that (they've been there about 10 years). I've seen them knock back plenty guys who were obviously trying to sell hot bikes. When Flemming first took over the shop, the cops treated him like a crooked pawnbroker for no reason, and it took him a long time for the cops to change their tune.

If anyone wants to **** their money away, feel free to go to Freedom Machine or Bike Now, or any of those ****** shops with their own
"team-******" uniforms.

Flemington Cycles, Racecourse Road Flemington, have a sale on at present, including their Giant range.

I can vouch for the sales and after-sales service.

good luck and happy bike-hunting!

before you even think about a bike brand type...get a proper anatomical cyclefit then try some out some rides with the sizes you find fit you ( if any)( friends, LBS's if they will lend you-most will tell you to f***off, and get a good handle on what type of riding you want to do....you'll probably find after you get a fit and decide on what you want from a bike that few of the "brand's" will be any good any way ( shimmey, unstable down hill, sore back, stuffed knees, bad wrists, neck pain...the list goes on) then decide on your budget and THEN...get some prices on bikes that fit your criteria...if its an LBS "brand"maybe you'll be lucky...more likely it will be a custom.....and accessorise to your budget....

I'd get a good fit then do the custom.
You'll save a heap in pain, anxst and bucks in the long run ..cheers

Thanks for the reply. I agree, but the custom is beyond my budget at the
moment.
So I'll just visit all the good shops and try all the off-the-shelf
bikes that seem to fit my riding.
I want something good for rides around the city and with all the holes
for racks and fenders and within $1000.
So far I see only Jamis Coda Sport, Giant CRX3 and Specialised Sirrius
meeting the above requirements.
And all the touring ones like Fuji Touring or are severely overpriced.

a good touring bike is at least $2000, but there are plenty of so so's below that with all the braze-ons and drill outs for panniers etc...BUT

Do the fit and see what you really need first , Fuji make a good low priced entry level road bike under $1000 ( $950) with ShimaNO 105, depending on your size and needs, and a few others around 1150-1400 range retail..( at least they make stable bikes for comfortable long rides and good angles. ( avoid steep angles and short chainstays (less than 41.5) - unless you are tiny .Personally I would avoid any Avanti, Learsport, Cervello and most Giants ( except the larger Hybrids which are stable bikes but heavy) so maybe something like the Elwood, Cypresse SE from Giant ( around $600) these are basic flat bar bikes, with lousy tires , (Kenda's), so some new Vittoria Randonneurs and bar ends, new grips and basic speedo/trip device and some spd pedals and you'll be set...The front fork is suspended, you may not want that....

But knowing what you need in fit is paramount, you may spend a grand first and have huge hassles and toss the bike only to start again....A custom may not be much more than your current budget with an entry level ensemble and strong reliable wheelset...

But if your budget is $1000, max....then you will probably have to get e 2nd hand that fits you ( if you can find a genuine one) and use the balance to get kitted out. ( Good fit is 200+, knicks, jersey, shoes and gloves and decent helmet (UNO probably can kit your budget for $200ish, so that leaves $600 for the bike.....remember it more than just top tube and seat tube dimensions....vital to know what you need in angles of seat stay, cockpit reach and angle of headtube, plus vitally, the length of chainstay to ensure correct postition ( frame wise, and stability wise)...

the words are not just from me...they are Andersons, Le Mond's, Armstrongs, Cookes, Merckx and Indurain's, all finally figured out through pain and suffering overcoming the ignorance of production bike makers to determine what performance and recreational riders need for optimal comfort, output and riding longevity... too many people have been elite riders suffering horrendous injury and putting themselves out of the sport and riding after trying to overcome ill fitting machines......your knees and back will thank you!

good luck

No, first hand. 4 years ago i helped a mate try and find his stolen bike, walked in. there it was! returned with Police. bike handed over after frame number checked. The staff there seemed genuinely shocked and it sounded like the person they recieved it off (they took id, btw) was 'known' to the fuzz for such activities but usually elsewhere...
The police said after that many stores get put in this position, not by their fault as many had produced related i.d. checks on bikes but that most times the ID was fake or many sellers were just brash enuff to do it with their own ID

I too have bought stuff there and the lads were good value. my observation isnt against them, just that unfortunately they get placed in this situe more than others. stop taking stuff so personally. the cops certainly made it clear to the lads they didnt hold them responsible as they had done everything feasible to do the right thing

PS wish they were further north

I've calmed down a lot now. I was pretty cranky last night when I read your post.

I know they've been caught out a couple of times by people who have all the correct ID, and seem to know all about the bike, including the original retail price, etc, etc.
