Heart Rate Question

I am trying to understand something regarding my heartrate while using a resistance trainer. I can, while riding on the rode, ride comforably with my heartrate at 145-155. My max is around 170. I ride short hills around 165. I also run and my HR is around 150-155 while running and can get it to the higher levels if I push. However, when I'm using my resistance trainer, I can usually only sustain around 130-135 for 45 minutes. I typically stay at around 130. To get my HR over this is a huge effort for my legs. If I push myself hard I can get my HR up higher but I REALLY feel it in my legs. Anyone have any thoughts or answers? BTW, I am 50 years old, 5'9" 160#.

Thanks in Advance.

HR whilst running is usually higher than whilst riding due to more muscle mass being utilised when running. I wouldn't worry about the discrepancy you note on this one.

Are you using a fan or are you in a cool, well ventilated room for your trainer workouts? Core body temp can play a big factor here.

Reduced power and duration are common when initially adapting to a trainer or ergonometer. Andy Coggan once posted that they have their physiology study subjects spend several weeks riding a trainer prior to the beginning of a study, for precisely this reason. After a few weeks, I think you will find that you can duplicate your road performances.
