  1. I have recently been using a Giant helmet that I picked up for cheap at a local store (approx. $40). Is safety a concern when using something of this quality level? I have seen helmet prices ranging from $50-$200, but what are the advantages of going to some of the expensive ones? Is it worth it?

If it has the relevant safety sticker on it (I doubt they would sell non compliant helmets) then there's no concern as long as it fits properly. Spending more money will give you more ventilation, more comfort, supposedly better looks, and a slight reduction in weight. If the Giant Helmet is comfortable and compliant...there's no need to change it.

  4. Thanks for the helpful comments.

I have one somewhat amusing point to add about my low-cost helmet. I find it makes a howling or whistling sound during semi-speedy down hill decents (like >50 kmph). I would suppose better helmets do not have this musical pipe effect. I never experienced it with past Bell or Trek helmets I have used.

The most important factor to consider is the fit. You should aim to have a helmet that fits you right . it should not move freely around your head and it should be tight fitting yet not sacrificing your comfort.

i encountered a crash 4 days ago and it sent me flying and hitting my head on the pavement. it broke the helmet in 2 places and the bike but only road rashes on my knees , no broken bones. i was making abt 35 kph at that time. lucky as it was not in mph 😉.

Get one that fits you right and wear it at all times at all time at all times.
