Helmets

I wasn't going to say anything till I read that.

one sunny summer afternoon, I went out to bomb a hill near my house on
my longboard. I have done 35mph on this hill, but this time my trucks
where too tight to make the corner at the bottom. edging nearer to the
side of the road, I noticed a truck parked on the side.

I didn't have much time to choose between hitting the truck while
standing on my board or bailing and trying to run it out. I decided to
bail with the hopes of not damaging someone else's property. I had never
bailed going that fast before.

When I hit the concrete I couldn’t take another step before being thrown
to the ground. I slid about 10 feet and my unprotected head slammed into
the bottom of the truck leaving a small dent, bounced off the truck and
smacked the concrete.

As I stood up, blood was running down my face and the back of my neck.
Then I loosened my trucks and bombed the hill again unhelmeted with no
problems.

I am not trying to prove anything by choosing to not wear a helmet when
I am unicycling. Just as you are not trying to prove anything by not
wearing a full body cast when you unicycle. Nor am I trying to
discourage anyone from wearing a helmet when they unicycle. I am just
saying that, missing a mount on your coker won't kill you, though it may
ruin +40$ worth of helmet. I don't think helmets are stupid (some look
cool), they just aren't for me.

I guess I am a minimalist, I don’t wear padding until something bothers
me. My hands being cut up by asphault is annoying, so I wear gloves. I
hit my shins pretty hard when I miss crankflips, so if I plan on doing a
bunch of crankflips I bring my shin guards along.

I don't do anything crazy enough to land on my head so I don't wear a
helmet. I regularly bash my shins so I wear shinguards. I don't wear
gloves often because I'm used to my hands having cuts and it doesn't
bother me. Sometimes I wear gloves when I'll be doing a lot of jumping
to keep the calluses on my hands down.

If I was doing muni I would wear a helmet for sure.

Glad to hear you survived the impact.

Heads hitting concrete is a lottery- it can be fine, or it can lead to
serious brain damage/death.

'Longboarder Magazine' spring 2001 issue had two reports on similar
accidents; the first a letter from a wife whose husband had come off his
longboard and hit his head on the road. The consequence was near death
and coma, followed by slow recovery with permanent brain damge.

The second was an obituary to Sean Patrick Clark who died coming off his
longboard without a helmet.

Young skaters in the UK are under such terrible peer pressure to not
wear helmets (it's generally considered to be 'cissy'); to me, free and
informed choice is seriously hindered by that state of affairs.

It's great that outdoor unicycling has so many participants who do use
the available safety gear- so that young people who do get into it, and
who want to look after themselves, can wear helmets without feeling like
freaks.

Ahh, sorry to hear that. Hope he's okay. I plan on wearing my helmet
for like all the trials stuff I do. Probably not as much freestyle
though.
