Hello, all.

I'm rather new in the cycling business, I'm 17 and my uncle is giving me his old racing bike after he got a new one.

How does one get into competetive cycling? I live in the Pretoria area. The Argus is rather intimidating for one such as myself, and definitely far away...

I'm not totally, new, mind, I've been riding around on my mountain bike for quite a while now, but racing is rather new to me.

Hi
The best thing you can do is to find a club, they will have plenty of advice (most of it will help) and will be able to get you into competitions.
also it is more fun, and safer, riding a a group.

Can't agree more.

Do try some races though - almost all races have a short, medium and long race (the long is normally as long as the Argus).

The shorter races will give you some insight into the kind of people that race, the format of the race, how ready you are to tackle a 100km race etc.

Be wary though - Pretoria is not flat!!!
