Hi there!!! So I'm new to bikes and I've got a little problem I've run into! I recently bought a rokform bike mount for my iPhone (http://www.rokform.com/cart/Rokbed-v....html).However, I have a quill stem and it won't fit (it says that it has to be installed on any 1-1/8" thread-less steer tubes). I bought a different quill stem that had a cap and I thought it would work, but that didn't work either. So, I'm looking for a way to convert to the headset and stem method. I live in downtown sac, so most of the area I ride around is flat, so I'm not a super heavy rider. Mostly ride between 5-15 miles at a time. Not looking to spend more than $50 to convert it. I currently have a threaded tube, please let me know what I need! Please include links to parts if you know of any. I'm sorry if this doesn't make any sense, I'm new to this so I don't know all the technical names of things. The tube is 1-1/8" here's what it looks like without the quill stem installed. http://i1265.photobucket.com/albums/...9/c0588d14.jpg And here is what it looks like with the quill stem installed (it's usually up a little higher, i just wasn't tightened in the picture). http://s1265.photobucket.com/albums/...t=dbb87132.jpg Thanks for looking!

Get one of these: http://www.excelsports.com/main.asp?page=8&description=Quill+Conversion+Adapter&vendorCode=PROFILE&major=1&minor=22

sized for your headset and an appropriate threadless stem to match your bar diameter. Several companies make these quill to threadless stem adapters but the Profile is a pretty nice design.

I looked at one of those, however, for the iphone mount, it seems as though it will only work if the cap screws into something, not if the bolt goes all the way down. Does that make sense?

The question is whether that M6x1" bolt on the phone holder is removable or somehow permanently attached to the phone mount. If it's removable then just thread the very long bolt from the Profile quill adapter though the Rockmount cap all the down through the adapter to the quill stopper wedge. Basically you'll replace a one inch long bolt with a seven or eight inch long bolt but that assumes the bolt currently on the phone holder can actually be removed and replaced.

You'll also be replacing the Profile supplied top cap, that's probably not a big deal but normally with one of these quill adapters you can be pretty arbitrary with stem spacers as the headset is not adjusted in the normal threadless manner and it's not important to be able to apply pressure to stem itself via the top cap. But you'll probably want the Rockmount top cap to bed into the stem for a solid fit so you'll want to use an appropriate size and number of spacers under or over the stem to make sure there's a gap of several mm between the top of the profile adapter and the top edge of the stem or the top edge of the top spacer just like you would when installing a normal threadless stem. That will give the Rockmount somewhere to bed down for a secure fit.

Good luck,
-Dave

1. REPLACE the current stem with a QUILL ADAPTER (about $20 +/-) ...
2. INSTALL an off-the-shelf modern stem ($5-to-$100+) on the "quill adapter" ...
3. INSTALL your "Rokform" mount ...

DONE!

+1 Just check the dimensions of the Quill adaptor. I just did this conversion, and needed an adaptor that was 25.4mm into the fork steering, and 1 1/8" to fit the modern stem. First Adapter arrived at it was for a 1" stem :-(
