I have a bike from the early 60s and its derailler is now unreliable. Where can
I buy a replacement that uses the existing set of cog wheels on the back axle?
I'm in London UK. any help much appreciated - I don't want to get rid of the
bike. Andy Evans

Ask in uk.rec.cycling or rec.bicycles.tech.

You'll get more help if you say what brand and model your derailleur and
other components are. You should expect to replace the rear cogs fairly
regularly if you're actually riding the bike, as well as the chain.

In fact, your chain (rather than, or perhaps in addition to, the
derailleur) could be your problem, if it has stretched from long use or
rusted from long neglect.

All in all, I'd suggest a trip to your local bike shop.
