Ride my Trek 7500 FX about 2k a year and it suits my needs just fine except for the brakes. The bike came equiped with Promax brand brakes. They stop OK, but after removing the wheel for flats and maintenace, the calipers never properly align. I always have to make adjustments to prevent the pads from locking onto the rims. Would appreciate any suggestions on how to avoid this? Also thinking about upgrading to Deore LX or XT brakes over the winter -any other suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Service the brakes, including cleaning and lubing pivots:

Check/replace cables and housings:
http://www.sheldonbrown.com/cables.htmlGrit, corrosion, etc. keep things from working smoothly.
If you need new pads, I suggest KoolStop Salmon color.
