Hi. I just stated cycling as a way to increase my aerobic conditioning for boxing/kickboxing as an alternative to running. So far i have really enjoyed myself, and over a month have worked up to doing a 25Mile ride in just less than 3 hours through country lanes with lots of hills.
Because im doing this for boxing rather than competitive cycling, I am working on my cardiac output at the moment (lowering my heart rate) and was wondering if anyone had any specific training regimes for this. At the moment i am just using a heart rate monitor to try and stay at about 150BPM over a long time, and am seeing improvements, but not as quickly as i expected. I find that because i ride on places like muddy canal paths or hilly lanes my heart rate sometimes goes up past the 150BPM mark (mostly if im on a hill and want to keep up a decent speed because of cars) and athough im not bothered about speed for speeds sake, i think it would help to be able to keep up a better speed on hills with less effort and was wondering how best to make my bike faster on roads, without compromising its offroad capacity too much. Im using an old but quite good mountain bike, with an aluminium frame and no suspension but very chunckey mountain bike tyres. Im wondering if i get some thinner hybrid tyres will i see any difference? What else could help without my ploughing too much money into a new bike?
Thanks in advance, Josh
