What is the Highest speed you have ever done on a bicycle ? What was the gearing (roughly) and your cadence ?
Missing a turn on the mountain and freefalling down a cliff does not count.

i checked my diary from when i lived in utah, and found it. i hit 73.2 mph coming down big mountain. it is an extremely long ascent so naturally a great descent. it was curvy at the top, but the last 3+ miles are straight and are at about 20%+ and you can just fly. i did this ride only a couple of times because it scared the shizite out of me. other than that i've hit 50+ many times living in cali and that ceased to be exciting.

97km/h (~60mph) in the Alps. On a 17% descent, unfortunately too short (only 3 miles or so). with a fully loaded bicycle (25kg load).

I never ever want to ride at this speed again. :)

    48 km/h?

Heh, my top speed seems so puny compared to the others posted here, but then again, I've never ridden on any big mountains.

+100km/h seems absolutely crazy and unbelievable. 73.2 MILES per hour? that's ridiculous. a tiny pebble or some uneven surfacing could easily send you to your ultimate resting place at those speeds *knock on wood* you are either lying or have empty space where your brain should be :p

i only did that once and it scared the hell out of me, and you'd be surprised at how stable you really are at that high speed, but i usually keep it around 50 now.

53.2 mph on the Nantahala Skyway in North Carolina. Might of built up a bit more speed, but I was overtaking a SUV without enough room to pass.

55+ mph several times in Hawaii coming down the Pali highway. The only bad part, was the clouds that you have to ride through make the road a little wet.

In Miami only flats. But the only thing that you can come down on is a bridge in Key biscayne that is about 80 to 100 ft high with a good decline for about 1/2 mile or a little less straight. top speed going down 51mph.

70mph on a mile long downhill at 9%. route 322 in wolcott, CT.
i had some help from a friend driving his car in front of me, but when i got up to top speed i was actually about 50 feet behind him.
my gear was a 53x12 and i was pedaling at 200rpms.

it was a lot of fun.

my top speed completely by myself is 60mph in bristol, CT. willis street to be exact. anyone from the area knows what i am talking about. i swear the road looks like a ski lift with the telephone polls. max grade is 18% for a couple hundred feet. its about 12% average for 2km. i passed a car going down, speed limit is 25mph because it is a residential area.

fastest speed in my town is 58mph on ward street ext. wallingford, CT. also a 25mph limit residential road.

39 mph. Much slower than most everyone else here, but hey, I was riding a mountain bike on a road, albeit a somewhat-steep mountain road. Never had the chance to go down super steep hill/mountain and haven't been on a road bike (even though I would like to).

Coasted up to 55 mph going down a mountain in Montanna with a strong tailwind (fully loaded). We were slack pacing, and my one of my buddies who as riding with me didn't pedal for a half hour due to the downhill and following tailwind. About 15 minutes of that was a 20-30mph coast with a slight downhill.

    That is some freaking hill.
I tucked up on the weekend down a reasonable hill and got to just over 60Kmh (not Mph). Theoretically I should go quite fast as I'm around 95kgs 185cm, greater mass downhill. Tires 110 psi-Check, Getting aero-check, 53x13 - check. I must be doing something wrong.
