Looks similar to the spring system in one of those cheap suspension
seat posts off a hybrid.

Dear Michael,

Alas, not oil, and no damping.

Automatic leather-sealed ball-valve air-cushion, which adjusts height
to the rider's weight. I like the "metallic feathers."
