    The solution is to stuff 8 gears and 2 chains inside a pair of hollow
    crank arms:

    The design also eliminates unwanted ankling--those platforms stay
    level, if everything goes right.

    The dip in the back of the pedal platform accomodates the heel of the
    rider's shoe.
