How bad will drinking hurt training?

Hi:

Over the years, having been in college, drinking, and bars for that matter, have become an important part of my lifestyle ( sadly). I was wondering if going out about twice a week and having a few beers will hurt my training. That is, I don't expect to get polluted, so I won't be hung over in the morning.

How often and how much do you guys drink while still adhering to your training schedules?

I drink as little as possible - which is nothing most weeks - maybe six beers over the xmas hols, and the occassional beer once a month or so.
 
I try to avoid strong alcohol, don`t remember the last time I drunk it... :)
but some glass of red wine after ride, or several beers is ok. especially, red wine is good , it helps to improve with the red blood cells a little bit and does no harm to overall health. I prefer dry wines ;)
 
I guess your in the beginning twenties. I was once there too. Now being a bit older I drink around 1 beer or 1 glass of red wine a day. That doesn't hurt. If you are serious about training, then you will make a choice in your consumption and you will know your limit before it affects your performance.

Everything is a matter of balance.
 
I think it can effect performance but it all depends on how what you are looking for in cycling. Recreation no problem Cat 4 or 5 race not bad up from there then thats another story

Maybe I am a sour puss, but this is how I look at it.

All alcohol is made by fermenting something. Fermented is a fancy word for spoiled. From Wikipedia, "... fermentation is often the same as putrefaction, meaning to allow the substance to naturally rot or decompose." Then there is the yeast (aka mold). So the food stuff is rotting while mold is growing on it. Then you filter out everything that will kill you (quickly). Then you drink it.

Is it any wonder I think all alcohol tastes like spoiled food?

Actually alcohol is a preservative, hence if you had a barrel of water and a barrel of beer, the beer would 'keep' longer than the water. Its the other compounds with the alcohol that give it taste but I would not recommend drinking pure alcohol !
Oh yeah and to be picky it says OFTEN the same not ALWAYS the same.
As everything in a beer should be 100% natural with no additives (unlike soft/energy drinks) so nothing in there will kill you quickly. As to the yeast thing don't get too hung up on microbiology as there are 'good' bugs and 'bad' bugs, sometimes one bug can be both depending on where it is.
Another example of fermentation is in bulk antibiotic manufacture, where the desired bug is grown, heat killed and the resultant antibiotic recovered. Various other drugs are made in this manner (ie Insulin, hGH ) usually on a modified e-coli bacteria.

There's nothing unhealthy about fermentation. The best cheeses are a rotten old moldy pile of milky substance, but they taste great and are fine for you.

On the topic of alcohol, it won't kill you, but near important ride or events it ain't the best idea. Basically you liver can't process alcohol and turn carbo's into glycogen at once... So just don' go bingeing to cloes to anythign you want to go well in.

As I said, this is how I look at it. I've had beer, tequila, wine, champagne, and rum and they've all tasted like spoiled food. Until I've had a few glasses.

And yes, even 3.2 beer will kill you, if you could keep bottle to mouth long enough. Most people pass out before that limit.

No nutrition scientist advising elite athletes allows alcohol intake during or after training.

I know that bit. One good thing about giving up the ale is that I'll save about 500 dollars every semester. Actually, about 650. The 150 includes taking out an extremely attractive female who will likely never sleep with me. But if you take your seat post out . . .

No, that chubby girl is trying to wake me up at 6:30 a.m. to get me to walk her back to her apt. Good things she's too dumb to realize that any normal human being being shaken that badly would wake up right away. I just kept my eyes closed.
