How can we make cycling more popular!

To make it more popular, you probably need to attract entry level riders, a lot of whom may be intimidated by road biking(I guess this applies to urban areas). More multi-use trails is definitely a step in the right direction.

I live in Arlington Virginia (across the river from Washington,D.C.) which apparently scores high on the bicycle-friendly chart. We've got a bunch good trails around which are always busy in nice weather. Rail trails seem to be a good target for this sort of thing.

Other than that, I'd have to use disc (frisbee) golf as an example of how to grow. Although the sport is relatively small (but gobs of fun), they look for exposure, camp/school programs, talking to park authorities about getting new courses installed (primarily in parks), pushing it as another healthy activity. It seems to me bicycling already has quite a bit of this though. Letting folks know about available trails and supporting local groups that push for more is (I think) a good way to go.

Just my five cents worth..................
