  1. i just bought bar ends but i'm not sure how to attach them. the ends i got are the kind that clamp on but the thing im not sure about is whether i need to shift the brake levers and gear shifters to make room to slide the grips along

take your bike to a bike shop and ask them to show you, being willing to pay them for their service. Bar ends should not be put on by someone inexperienced since a faulty installation could end up in a crash causing death or severe injury.

if you don´t feel confident then just pay to have them fitted - it´s fast and as a consiquence cheap .
most bike shops are happy to help a beginner because they know he´ll be back for more expensive stuff later - if they´re not then find a better shop .
