I've tried and have always failed. I know it can be done because my friend has done it on my bike right in front of me before, wearing tennis shoes and using my strapless, non-clipless pedals. He got about 5 inches of air on both wheels.

I just don't understand. Whenever I attempt to do it my feet simply leave my pedals.

If you cant do it without clips then I would say your technique is completely wrong as you should use your body rather than your feet to get the lift.
Make sure your crank is vertical & your feet slightly pointing the pedals down now you have to sort of charge your body by pushing down & forward then explode that power up & forward a bit using your shoulders & forearms & sort of scoop using your thighs, this will give you the lift & you can either hop upwards & keep the bike level or bring the front up first & a fraction of a second scoop the back to do the "american" style hop.
You use the same sort of technique that you use when you do a jump, push, charge, release.
From what you say your just using your legs to get lift & not your body so remember use your upper body then scoop your legs to propel you forward then up & its the same as any other skill on a bike it takes practice & more practice but hops are easy to learn the basics on.

Imagine you're leaning over a railing and your bike is on the other side. Could you reach over and pull the bike off the ground by the bars? Sure.

You're riding along, stand up on the pedals, jump up, and pull up and forward on the bars at the same time. The bike will come up with you. Watch the BMX guys some time.

You know, I used to have the same trouble as you do. Then I just realized that buhhyhops are just:

-stand up straight on your bike
-apply pressure to the pedals in a diagonal position like this \
-in this diagonal position, push your feet backwards and try to jump and pull your handle bars up, while holding the pedals in it's diadonal position "\"
-twist the handlebars while you hop. This comes natural when you can do it.

I can't do it until I met up with some friends and they taught me. Maybe you should get that friend of yours to show you how.

Its really hard 2 explain... I used 2 be really into BMX until my friend got me into mtbing. I have actually always been able 2 do it. You really just pull up on the handlebars and do a kind of manual until u get ur front wheel2 the desired height, then u level ur pedals and kind of point ur toes slightly downward. Then, u just pull up on the pedals with ur legs! u will know it when u do it. Once u do it 4 the 1st time, u will know how 2 do it from now on. Good luck!

well, as someone said earlier, just like a bmx bike. its harder to do of course with a mtb since they are heavier but its the same for the most part. you can either 'jump' from the bike and pull the handle bars, or like skateboarding, pull the nose up and lean forward to bring the back wheels off the ground. just like an ollie

my advice is to get a cheapo bmx bike or use a bmx bike u allready have and practice on it. When u get able to bunny hop about a foot off of the ground, then switch to your mountain bike and tryit on that. I actually find mountain bikes easier to hop on because of suspension. If you have full-suspension on your mountain bike, just bounce it an pull up on it. hard. You should leave the ground. On my bike I can bounce the suspension and pull up and clear anything from curbs to even tires (dont ask)! Good luck again.
