Is there a definition for categorising climbs in the big races (ie. Cat 1, Cat 2 etc)? I'm thinking distance, gradient, altitude etc. But I suspect there's a x-factor that the race organisers apply to determine the category? eg. two climbs identical in distance, avg gradient and altitude might be quite different to ride.

I'd like to know so I can categorise some of my local climbs to see how they compare for interests sake.

I was about to post the same question. I'd like to know the "formula" that they use to determine how steepness affects the rating once the vertical is figured.
