How do you discard used gel packs?

The other day my wife made a comment about how inconvenient the gel bottle I just bought looked. Then after I told her I normally toss them on the spot, she was in shock that I would actually litter. I don't blame her. I tried to hold on to them in the past but they always ended up being a sticky mess.

I used to toss the used packets on the side of the road, until I wound up getting scolded on a group ride a while back. I have since put the "used" packs back into the jersey pocket from which it came. Unfortounately, I forget that I put the used gel pack back in the jersey more than half of the time. It'll go through the washer and dryer and leave a sticky hardened mess that garner's the jersey a second washing. Lately I've been trying to do the trash can drivebys, but miss a lot. At least it is better than littering the trail. My 2¢.
