Another female jogger on South Shore badly beaten Posted By: Claude Beaulieu [email protected] · 6/29/2012 9:18:00 AM

Police in Longueuil were struck by the gratuitous violence used by an unidentified male cyclist who beat a young female jogger early yesterday. The attack happened just before seven in the morning on a bike path that winds its way between Autoroute 132 and the Saint-Lawrence river.

Police say the assailant, a man in his thirties, came up behind a woman, aged in her early twenties, as she jogged. He threw her to the ground and started beating her with his fists. At one point, the young woman either fell or was pushed down a ten-foot ravine onto large, sharp rocks. Police were alerted by a passerby who witnessed part of the scene. The woman suffered severe but non-life-threatening injuries. She has since been released from hospital
.
Investigators say there appeared to be no attempt to rape or rob the woman.

They are now looking for possible connections with earlier, similar incidents, including one in neighbouring Boucherville last November when a female jogger was attacked and stabbed by an unidentified man.

Bicyclist robbed, assaulted by thugs in hockey masks Posted by John de Leon
-- From Times staff reporter Mike Lindblom:

Cycling activists are wondering how to protect themselves after a bike commuter was robbed of his wallet last week along the Interstate 90 bike route in Seattle.

The crime happened just after 5 p.m. Thursday, as the victim, a Beacon Hill man, was riding through Sam Smith Park, west of the I-90 Mount Baker bike tunnel. The cyclist said he was yanked off his bike by "two hoodlums in all black wearing hockey masks," one of whom punched him in the face.

After contacting police, he wrote a detailed account to online forums at the Cascade Bicycle Club and point83.com. Between condolences, other cyclists suggested riding in groups, carrying a baton weapon, or going to neighborhood anti-crime meetings.

"If automobile drivers were regularly being pulled from their cars and beaten, there would be a tremendous response from media and police," wrote bicyclist Ben Feigert of Seattle.

Seattle police will assign the case to robbery detectives, spokeswoman Renee Witt said today.

A similar crime happened along the route last May, when a Seattle University professor was attacked by three teenagers who stole his wallet.

Left foreground in the picture...another thuglife libtard. 'Flash mob' actions worry Minneapolis police

Charges filed in last week's attack on three bicyclists.

A sudden, random attack on three bicyclists last Friday on Nicollet Mall kicked off a melee that had Minneapolis police pursuing 15 to 20 youths who assaulted the bikers and ran through an outdoor restaurant patio as they fled, according to court documents.

The event unfolded in front of police officers patrolling the pedestrian and transit thoroughfare after "numerous, recent 'flash mobs' of individuals engaging in criminal conduct," according to a criminal complaint.

Since early February, attacks on or near Nicollet Mall have involved groups of young men targeting other young men. The attacks put one victim in intensive care, and left another man with a broken jaw.

"It's a big concern for us," said Minneapolis Police Inspector Kris Arneson, who oversees downtown enforcement. The department has stepped up its patrols, made arrests for curfew and truancy violations and is working with schools and the county attorney's office on chronic offenders, she said. In two extreme cases, the police have stripped the rights of two juveniles to come downtown, placing them under "geographic trespassing" restrictions that mean immediate arrest if they're seen in the area.

As for the recent string of attacks, Arneson said social media often play a part in bringing the youths downtown. Once there, a member of the group will pick a target and jump someone. Everyone else then joins in the attack, she said. "They call it 'click mobbing,'" she said. "It's the mentality that they all know they are going to do it."

One of the cyclists who was attacked Friday evening said he and two friends had just pulled up to the intersection of 5th Street and Nicollet Mall when they were jumped.
"We were just biking, the three of us, having some laughs and enjoying the night," said the cyclist, who didn't want his name used out of fear for his safety. It was 7:45 p.m. and the street was crowded with people enjoying the unusually warm evening, he said.

Suddenly "some kid" ran up to the man's friend and punched him in the face, breaking his jaw. Another eight to 10 youths surrounded the cyclists, yelling and trying to provoke a fight.
Two police officers had been watching seven youths at a bus stop when they saw them "suddenly surge" toward the cyclists.

As the officers gave chase, the group fled with one victim's bike. They ran through the seating area at Oceanaire's patio, picking objects off the tables to throw at one of the bicyclists running after them.

Officers caught Antonio D. Jones, 20, of Brooklyn Park. He was charged Monday with felony fifth-degree drug possession, third-degree riot and fifth-degree assault. Officers also arrested three juveniles.

Police chief hops on suspect's own bike to chase him down

Chief Joe Leonardi was on his post-lunch patrol Thursday when he saw a man who matched the description of a suspect his officers had been looking for in connection with a July 3 assault.

By Samantha Tata, NBCLosAngeles.com
The Redondo Beach police chief returned to his rank-and-file roots on Thursday when he hopped on a bike and chased down a suspect believed responsible for an assault on a city worker.

Follow @msnbc_us
Chief Joe Leonardi was credited with catching the man who police believe matched the description of a suspect in a July 3 assault.
“If (the chief) didn’t do something, the guy would have definitely gotten away,” said Sgt. Scott Weibel, with the Redondo Beach Police Department.

Not only did the chief make the collar on a bike, but the two-wheel contraption was the suspect's getaway vehicle. The man had ditched it while he was fleeing from the cops.

The drama went down after lunch Thursday when Leonardi spotted a 36-year-old transient resembling an assault suspect and riding a dark-colored bicycle, police said.
After being led through a zigzag maze of streets and alleys, police caught up with the bicyclist, but he didn’t stop.

He dropped the bike and ran.

It was then that Leonardi -- dressed in shirt and tie -- hopped on the bike and pedaled after him.

“I knew I would never catch up,” said Leonardi. “So I decided to get on the bike.”

The man surrendered after officers flooded the area. The man, whose identity was not immediately released, was booked into jail on suspicion of delaying an officer’s investigation and possession of stolen property, police said.

Police were investigating the man’s connection to a July 3 assault and a burglary of a Hermosa Beach home.
The bike was booked into evidence.

Police also found a stolen Cal Poly San Luis Obispo class ring that they say was tossed by the suspect during the pursuit.

Tip led to arrest in Shunick disappearance case
Suspect’s truck found burned in Texas

LAFAYETTE — While Mickey Shunick remains missing, Lafayette Police Chief Jim Craft expressed confidence Friday that the man they arrested is the assailant who, they believe, kidnapped and killed the young University of Louisiana at Lafayette student.
A tip linking Brandon Scott Lavergne to a white Chevrolet Z71 truck led police to identify him as a suspect in the May 19 disappearance of Shunick, Craft said during a news conference.
Lavergne, a 33-year-old offshore worker and a registered sex offender, was arrested Thursday on counts of first-degree murder and aggravated kidnapping in the young woman’s disappearance.
Lavergne was identified as a suspect after police were alerted through the department’s tips line on June 14 about a white Z71 registered to Lavergne.
Further investigation revealed Lavergne’s truck was reported stolen in Montgomery County, Texas, and was later found in San Jacinto County, Texas, on May 31, Craft said.
“The truck had been burned just days after police released photographs of the truck as a vehicle of interest,” Craft said, referring to video footage that captured Shunick as she rode her bicycle along St. Landry Street during the early morning hours of May 19.
“Based on information and surveillance, detectives were able to positively identify the truck that traveled directly behind Mickey in the video as belonging to Brandon Lavergne,” Craft said.
The chief also said detectives have evidence connecting Lavergne to the general area where Shunick’s damaged bicycle was found May 26 in the water under the Whiskey Bay Bridge along Interstate 10.
“We can place his vehicle in that area at that time,” Craft said, declining to specify what evidence led investigators to that conclusion.
After Lavergne had been developed as a suspect, Louisiana State Police stopped him Thursday afternoon at the intersection of Interstates 10 and 49 on an unrelated traffic violation, Craft said.
Lavergne was brought to the Lafayette Police Department for questioning in the Shunick case.
Once there, Lavergne declined to cooperate with investigators and requested an attorney, Craft said.
Police also began searching Lavergne’s home near Lawtell in rural St. Landry Parish on Thursday and continued the search on Friday, the chief said.
Craft later said investigators determined Lavergne had purchased another vehicle — also believed to be a white Chevrolet Z71 — after his vehicle was reported stolen.
Craft also confirmed that Lavergne had blacked out some information on his driver’s license that identified him as a sex offender. He was convicted of aggravated oral sexual battery in 2000.
On Friday, Lavergne appeared before 15th Judicial District Commissioner Thomas Frederick for his 72-hour court hearing.
Lavergne told Frederick he could not afford an attorney and was referred to the 15th Judicial District Public Defender Office, Frederick said after the hearing.
Lavergne is being held without bail.
Paul Marx, district defender for the 15th Judicial District Public Defender Office, said Lavergne’s case has been assigned to two veteran death-penalty attorneys from Acadia Parish, Burleigh Doga and Clay Lejeune, along with Elliot Brown from the office’s full-time staff.
Shunick’s family did not attend the news conference Friday, but they did offer the following statement:
“All we want is Mickey back. All we care about is finding out what happened and getting our girl back. We are holding up fine and staying positive, the chances of her being alive today are the same as they were yesterday … and for that reason we are keeping the faith!”
Craft said the search for Shunick continues.
“We want the family to know that we will not rest until we can fully know what happened to her,” Craft said. “We continue our efforts to locate and bring Mickey home.”
A lack of remains could be one possible complication in the prosecution of the case.
“It’s not good not to have a body, but it doesn’t preclude an arrest or prosecution,” said Craig Colwart, head of the public defenders office in St. Mary, St. Martin and Iberia parishes.
Colwart, who is not connected with the Shunick case, added that a body is generally a key piece of evidence in any homicide but he can recall successful murder prosecutions that lacked the remains of a victim.
“Is it difficult? Yes, absolutely. You would rather have a body because the first thing you have to do is convince the jury that the person is not alive,” said prosecutor Chester Cedars, who handles cases in neighboring St. Martin Parish and is not involved in the Shunick case.
Shunick, who would have turned 22 two days after her disappearance, was an animal lover and an avid cyclist.
She was last seen shortly before 2 a.m. leaving a friend’s house at 100 Ryan St. near downtown on her black Schwinn bicycle, riding toward her parents’ home on Governor Miro about five miles away.
Craft said Shunick’s family reported her missing that afternoon after she failed to return home, missed her brother’s graduation from high school, failed to notify anyone of her location and did not respond to calls made to her cellphone.
Her disappearance led to a massive search effort, attracted national media attention and resulted in a groundswell of community support.
That effort continues.
At the volunteer headquarters on Johnston Street, coordinator Margaret Bearb said Friday the group will continue to search until they “bring Mickey home.” Volunteers are keeping their spirits high in the hopes that Mickey is still alive, Bearb said.
“We are not going to close the doors,” she said. “It’s going to be business as usual until Mickey comes home. The family really wants that.”
She said the mood at the headquarters did temporarily darken Thursday afternoon when news of Lavergne’s arrest surfaced. The mood did not last, though.
“Naturally, we all took a deep sigh,” she said. “It was a good relief no matter what the outcome because our whole goal was to find Mickey. It got somber. And then we all picked up our chins off the floor and said, ‘We have to stay here and stay strong until Mickey’s home.’ ”
Bearb, a family friend who has been part of the volunteer effort since day one, said she told Shunick’s family to remain at home and out of the spotlight Friday.
“We want to give them that time to be together and put their heads and thoughts together,” Bearb said. “This has been one long journey.”
Lavergne’s arrest this week comes about four years after his release from prison on the aggravated oral sexual battery charge.
He was accused of tying up, blindfolding and then sexually assaulting an 18-year-old woman in rural Evangeline Parish in 1999, according to a summary of the case in Evangeline Parish court records.
Lavergne, who was a soldier stationed at Fort Polk at the time, first told investigators the sexual contact was consensual, but in February 2000 he agreed to plead guilty to aggravated oral sexual battery in exchange for a 10-year sentence and the dismissal of a related aggravated burglary charge.
Lavergne served 85 percent of his 10-year sentence, reduced for good behavior, and was released in August 2008, state Department of Public Safety and Corrections spokeswoman Pam Laborde said.
She said Lavergne remained under supervision after his release until February 2010, which would have been the end of his 10-year term.
“There were no violations or revocations,” she said.
Lavergne was married in September 1999 while the sexual battery investigation was pending, but his wife filed for divorce two weeks before Lavergne’s guilty plea, alleging in the divorce petition that he had struck her on two different occasions.
While in jail, Lavergne completed courses in auto body repair and served as tutor in a sex-offender treatment program, according to an unsuccessful petition he filed in 2005 to reduce his sentence.
Lavergne is required to register as a sex offender for life because of his conviction, but he filed a petition on May 31 of this year to be relieved of that obligation.
A hearing had been set for August.
“Since defendant’s release from incarceration and parole, defendant has maintained a clean record,” the request states.
Lavergne was in prison when most of the unsolved slayings of eight women in Jefferson Davis Parish happened. Those killings occurred in and around Jennings from May 2005 through August 2009.

Solo cyclist robbed at gunpoint on Redwood Rd. Wednesday, Aug. 18 Submitted by dcathey on August 20, 2010 - 8:03de la tarde

A friend was robbed on Redwood Road on Wednesday. As he was going down Redwood Road, a small size car forced him to stop.

They had a shotgun and asked for money. They took his money and his Ipod. The only reason they didn't take his bike was that their car was too small for it to fit into.

He fortunately was not hurt. He did get their license plate and he said he had the serial number for the Ipod they stole. He had not heard from the police when I spoke to him. That is very scary! As much as I like the solitude, it makes me take notice. Please be careful out there.

especially when riding solo in somewhat isolated areas.

A 17-year-old boy had his bicycle stolen as he cycled along in the Wybers Wood area in Grimsby.
The incident took place on Sunday, June 17 when, at around 2.30pm, the boy was cycling along the Freshney in the direction of St Nicholas Drive.
As he approached the entrance to St Nicholas Drive, a man on a bicycle, who was not known to him, is alleged to have pushed him from his bicycle, causing him to fall to the floor.
As the boy got himself up off the floor and picked up his bicycle, the man is then alleged to have thrown the bicycle he was travelling on at the boy.
This again caused the boy to drop his bicycle, which the man then picked up and rode away in the direction of St Nicholas Drive.
The boy the picked up the offender’s bicycle, in an attempt to follow him, but he was not able to see which direction he travelled.
The boy was not injured in the incident.
The stolen bicycle is described as a baby blue coloured GT Chucker, with black forks, a distinctive black and white saddle and white wheels.
The offender is described as a white male, aged in his mid 20s and around 6ft 4ins tall. He was wearing a black coloured baseball cap, a black waterproof jacket with its hood up and black tracksuit bottoms.
Police are appealing for anyone who may know the whereabouts of the bicycle, or anyone who may have information in connection with the incident to call Humberside Police on 101 quoting crime reference 1914291.
