How much chain lube?

Hi I live in dry, dusty California, don't ride much. How much chain oil do you recommend and how best to apply it? What dry lube do you recommend?

I apply a lot of White Lightening on the chain, until it is almost dripping, then wipe off all the black, grimy excess with some paper towels around the chain as I spin the crank. So I am lubricating and cleaning at the same time.

BUT when I put lots of lube, it attracts lots of dirt, and wears chain/cassette. So now I only put a little oil.
