How much do pro cyclists get paid?

Just out of curiosity, over what distance was the TT covered and what was your time? Would like to get a idea of the standard of cycling at club level. Was it a local TT, ie. nr Basildon?

Thought i could answer a small TT question for you. At club level the times vary hugely. At my old club times varied from 32mins to 19mins for a 10mile.

Some of it depends on what type of club you join, this club did every aspect of cycling. Whereas my current club are all specialist TT'ers apart from myself.

Best bet is to go along and see what you can do.

you will soon

im 15 so i could care less about that **** :p

doesnt this really annoy you, reading about how other people are making 5 and 10 mill a year when your goin through high school with almost nuthin in your pockets.

LOL Wait till you're goin to college and the money is actually coming out of your pocket just so that you can go to school! :D Prepare to be poor for a very long time.

I'd say that your average athletes who do this on the professional level do it because they love the sport and dont think much about the money. I realize there are some exceptions like Lance, Jan, or Cipo and also some of these athletes have families that they must provide for. If you want to make lots of money be a lawyer or a doctor.

I rowed in college(y'know... crew?) and I know of and have met a lot of STRONG athletes who graduated from universities like Cal, Princeton, and Stanford who live in absolute poverty in order to train 6 hours a day in hopes of going to the World Championships or the Olympics. Now any one of these men or women could stop training, go out and get a job, and start making 100k a year within 5 years but they choose not to. Instead they choose to put their lives on hold in hopes that one day all their hard work might lead them to their goals. I believe it works the same for cycling.

I love cycling and rowing equally. Just to ride in the Tour de France, Giro, Vuelta, or the Olympics would be payment enough. Hell, I'd give almost anything to do so. If someone offered to pay me $15,000 a year to do either I'd say 'yes' in a heartbeat.:)

Yes it is! But salaries are dependent on popularity of sport not on difficulty of it! It`s the same with non-sport ones! Worker gets less than secretary but his job is a lot more difficult!

More than you and I make...

Lance's second book let drop that base salary for a USPS rider was USD$60k/year. Plus all the cycling gear you'll ever need... plus a $50k bonus if Postal wins the TDF, and Lance added another $50k to that.

It is traditional for the prize money to be split among the team. That is why riders want to be named to the Tour Team and riders like Lance throw in an extra bonus. This is why the teams with a hot sprinter like Petachi or Mario in his prime work so hard in a train. They know if there man wins they get part of the winnings.
I think the division II and III teams are less than this. I think the teams pay for alot of the expenses, but a domestique's base salary isn't much.

Eh don`t be ridiculous! Riders from "trains" or helpers are doing that because they`re paid for it and not because winnings, which are very small comparing with salaries! I`m sure that all helpers get extra money from the team if their leader is succesful!
Winnings are important in lower categories (juniors, u23, ...) where their salaries are very small or even don`t have them..

60K to win the TDF- 6 million to run an oblong ball (doesn't even bounce right) 10 yards up a field every half hour. Thats America for you...****
Your comparing one cycling event winnings with a pro Football players yearly salary. Football players don't make 6 million a game. If you add up Lance's prize winnings over a year, its probably higher than $60k including all the bonus money. Also, Lance doesn't to worry about a huge muscular guy named "Bubba" trying to kill him like pro football running backs do. I read somewhere that a running back in the NFL has a average career lifespan of 3 years before he is either injured or replaced by a younger/better player.

That's America for you. ;)

According to Lance's book a domestique doubles his salary when he is on the winning team and that doesn't include the "Lance Bonus"
