When i reassemble my front wheel hub, is it better to leave a gap (about the width of one ball bearing), rather than have them all packed close together?. This is what i seem to remember doing years ago. And besides that, an exploded diagram of the hub (Shimano Deore LX HB 563) seems to indicate that there should be 10 bearings in one side, and not 11, as i found (someone else serviced it last time)

Yes, tighly packed minus 1. Follow Shimano's guide.
