Welcome Shayleehnetinka! There are many good brands. To improve your chances of getting a good bike that fits you properly I recommend going to a bike shop instead of a department type store or ordering on line. Some good names are Giant, Trek, Specialized, Cannondale, Pinarello, Colnago, Orbea. There are many others too. If you're interested in a bike made of Titanium instead of Carbon Fiber or Aluminum some good names are Lynsky, Moots, Independent Fabrications, Litespeed and several others too. Again welcome and enjoy your riding!
Depends on what kind of material you want. I think that Specialized has the best Carbon Fiber frames, and their quality control is second to none; what's weird is that the expensive Pinarello had the worse quality control, but don't tell owners that! If you want a titanium bike I think Lynskey is the best, they pioneered the construction method used by other TI makers today, he was the original owner of Litespeed, so he's been around longer than anyone. Aluminium wise for the time being Cannondale is still pretty high but time will tell if the new owner will start to cheapen the **** out of it like they have with all the other brands they took over; on the higher end of the AL scale the best would have to be Co Motion.
Obviously all of that is just my opinion surely to be shot down by others which is fine. For some interesting videos on the various frame materials watch:

Depends on how much money you want to spend, if you want to go mail order or bike shop only, and there are a lot of good brands currently.
Bike shop wise from what I saw pictures of tubes sawed lengthwise Specialized seems to have the best quality control over most other bike shop brands. Mail order wise I am especially fond of Lynskey, which are titanium bikes, their lower end model is quite a bargain...especially if found on sale. If you're looking for a low cost alternative Diamondback has a couple of good models for under $1,200, those can be found at Dicks Sporting Goods stores; as is the Specialized Allez Elite which can be found at bike shops. If you want something even lower costing then those then try the Specialized Dolce which is a woman's specific bike as well, this bike has Specialized Zerts inserts in the fork which helps to smooth out vibrations from the road going into your hands, arms and shoulders which could help make the ride more relaxing. Specialized better road bikes also have Zerts inserts in the rear seat stays as well as the fork if you want a comfortable ride front and rear.
There are thousands of ideas that others will bring up and those will be good ideas, i just kept it very short and simple for you...I hope! LOL!!

Hi. I would advise you to go with cheaper moder but good brand. It is smarter to try first mountain bike, because you can cycle it everywhere and you will get the idea of what kind of second bike to buy. Check Diamondback overdrive 29er, bike worth money for sure. all the specs are here
Another good brand for budget people is the Btwin, not sold in the US as far I know but they offer a really good deal for the money.
You do have to be careful with buying any mountain bike that has a suspension fork because anything under $800 will come with a very problematic suspension fork that will be heavy and not very responsive for rough terrain, plus it will take more effort to pedal it because the suspension action will require more power to pedal.
