I have no idea at all!!

I use a Garmin E-Trex Legend on my Bike. The following link is for their European map.

In the US at least, most roads are shown, not just major ones. In fact, one the the main problems is on small local roads, them map software I use doesn't show a difference between paved and gravel roads.

You are not exactly going treking in Borneo. The road system in most European countries has been established in many cases for generations. They have excellent maps, in fact if you recall Michelin sold U.S. maps and may still do so.

I suspect that you trepedations stem from not wanting to take a wrong turn in a country, especially without parity of speaking the language. On the contrary the unavoidable day to day struggle of (where is the, how do I get to, how much is?"😉 will provide you with the contact and emersion in local culture which in time will be the treasured memories of you odyssey.

Get yourself a map, ask questions of the best English speaker, eat THEIR food, be with them, don't try and bring your culture with G.P.S. etc with you.
That's when the fun starts!

Thanks for the advice, I think after all I'll just get a map and plod along as best I can and if I get lost I get lost.

I'm actually mainly gonna be cycling through Germany, the home of Garmin and other GPS giants so it's more a case of bringing their culture home to them. I'm also Irish, speak German and French and live in Sweden so I'm quite Europen as it is but I do get your point and think you're dead right. Thanks again for the advice.
