1. I have been reading these forums for 2 years now, and have finally decided to sign up. I bought a Trek 1500 a few years ago. I rode all the time but took the semester off for a school I attended. I have been getting back into it and riding everyday now. Now I’m looking to transfer and ride for a school. I was wondering what are the best and most valuable ways that I can drop weight, improve my bike, etc. Having to pay for school, I don’t have a ton of extra money, but am willing to spend. Are there any secrets or improvement that I can make? I would appreciate any help. Thanx!

  2. Whereas you will see a lot more expensive and sexier bikes at the start line, any differences between you and those other guys won't be because of the bikes, but more based on conditioning, skills, etc....

Work on your fitness, pack riding skills, body position, cornering, etc... next I would make sure that you have decent shoes/clothing.

As for the bike itself, you want to make sure that your gearing is suitable for the terrain that you will be racing/training on. Yes, some will make fun of your triple crank, but you could always just remove the inner ring and convert it to a double (se recent thread on this).

Down the road a bit, if you get really serious, you can see what your budget is and improve your wheels a bit.
