I would guess #1; if it is anything else, his pre Tour rhetoric will look pretty flimsy.

Pulling out early would be extremely poor form.

Lol IF that happens he will fake a crash or an illness...he won't finish le tour and everyone still says the others won, because LA crashed of got sick!

I tend to think he'd be gracious with his words but sullen in his attitude, if that makes any sense. I also think that he'd like to make it to Paris and finish regardless of his placing, except that I think he'd rather finish 4th instead of 2nd or 3rd. I'm guessing the thought of having to stand on a lower platform on that podium would eat him up inside.
