I tried a few other servers 6 months ago, I think opera was one but I
wasn't impressed.
I'll give Thunderbird a go but at first glance it looks a lot like oe.

I would really like to be able to use regular expressions to killfile
entire threads. Is that possible?

Why are all my words underlined with red dots?

You might like to consider using either MicroPlanet Gravity or Forte
Agent. Gravity is now free and there's a free version of Agent too.
Both seem to be highly regarded by Windows users.

Microplanet Gravity is pretty good - you can mark threads as 'watched'
or 'ignored' and you can also use regular expressions to do various
things. It's just a news client though, you'll need something else to
do mail (although Gravity lets you send email replies to news posts).
