I've been looking at a few British base online retailers, and was wondering exactly what is meant when they list the selling price for an item as "inc VAT", and the lower price for the same item as "ex VAT"?

VAT is Value Added Tax. In the shops it mean that sales tax has already beed added so you pay what you see. No surprises at the pay point. Obviously they can not charge tax for selling to other countries.
