Inherited a Bike, need help!

search on [Vitus 979] for details on the bike.

Those pedals are LOOK. They are still in business. Any shoe that is LOOK compatible. Otherwise you need to replace the pedals.

I personally would be interested in the areas where the tubes meet. Legend has it that the bike is glued not welded.

You might also post the names on the components. Shimano 600 would be nice.

The brakes are good ones, Modolo were competitive with Campagnolo Record models. Your levers appear to be Modolo also. The levers are mounted too low on the hooks and the handlebars should probably be rotated up a bit.

The shifters and derailleurs appear to be Campy...perhaps Victory? Can you read the manufacturer or any info stamped on the gear changing mechanisms? It could be old Shimano stuff too.

The crankset looks like Campy Super-Record, but Sakae Ringyo made an almost exact copy. Look for stamping info. Be aware: crank arms with the lightening grooves on the outer face are prone to fracture! Sudden failure that may cause a loss of control. Ask me how i know this?!

The frame is glued together...and also pinned in some joints. Vitus were known, nay reknown!, for their spectacular failures...occuring most often under powerful and/or heavier riders. Ilf you see white powder forming near a joint, be very afraid! If you don't see white powder forming near a joint...be afraid anyway. The glue used by Vitus was degraded by moisture and joint flexure. This, as it turned out, was not the ideal bonding agent to use on a bicycle frame.

I rate the old aluminum Vitus bicycles as far better collectibles than daily drivers.
