My son has severe heart defects and is on Warfarin with an ideal INR for him to be between 2-3, he has been having problems with his INR shooting up to between 5-6 obviously this causes problems with bruising and bleeding. Does anyone know of any early warning signs/symptoms that appear when INR is starting to rise. As he is a typical 9 year old boy I dont want to stop him playing just incase he gets cut or has a bump however I dont see what else I can do to prevent the problems he is having. Thanks in advance

Is it something to do with his diet do you think? It must be very hard to control with a child but his daily diet routine should be quite steady. When I was given a wrong prescription a couple of years ago my INR was 10 and I had to have a Vit K injection but I can only remember that I felt generally unwell i.e. there was no specific warning sign. The pharmacist who monitors mine told me that sometimes there just doesn't seem to be any particular reason why the INR has such varied readings. There is another drug that may replace Warfarin but I don't think it is on the market yet. I hope he can get better in the next few years with all the research being done i.e. gene therapy.

Home INR monitoring systems are becoming more affordable every day. Would suggest you look into it.
Hi Ali, My 3 yr old daughter is also on coumadin. We do check her numbers every 2-3 weeks with a home test kit. Roche PT/INR test kit. They may be willing to donate a used machine based on your Childs age. We have never noticed any signs of higher INR other than bruising. Regular diet is key which I am sure you are aware of. My daughters only spikes up when she is sick. Usually never goes up unless she is not feeling well or her appetite is not normal. We are usually trying to keep it from going to low. What dosage is your son on. You will find that there are very few kids on blood thinners. We have only met a handful.
