The big debate in the medical community with regard to
statins seems to center on their use in primary prevention
of heart disease, i.e. whether or not to treat healthy
people with them and if so when and how.. This article was
published today in the New England Journal of Medicine.

For all the naysayers in this group we need to remember that
for decades the argument the tobacco industry was making
that is wasn't proven that tobacco caused cancer and heart
disease, etc., even though much of the evidence pointed to
the fact that indeed it did.

From what I have read so far the benefits of statins
outweigh the risk certainly for high risk patients. Again as
I was saying, the real question now centers on the
benefits/risks for low and moderate risk patients.

While there are companies making a fortune on Statins we
cannot assume that all the evidence on their (statin)
benefits is bogus manipulation and that there is a coverup
underway to hide all of kinds of terrible side effects.
