Is Melbourne a Cycling Friendly City?

I have just received an offer from Monash University for a master course.
It's in Clayton Campus I believe.
I'd like to know if Melbourne is a cycling-friendly city.
I'd also like to know if I can find an entrance level cycling club around Clayton?

Any input is appreciated.

Although I've never ridden in Melbourne, I know many a Victorian who has (al now living in Sydney), and they all reckon its a very bike friendly city - certainly at least more so than Sydney.

Yes. Melb has a good network of paths and motorists are OK.

fantastic roads, etc -- some say the best in the country by far -- but I wouldn't say the motorists are friendly .........nah, they're ok.

i think the design of the roads make it more friendly

most roads are 2.5 width, and there are always tram passengers ready to jump out at you anytime...

essentially, people in Melbourne are alot more used to stopping and avoid anomalies... whereas ppl in Sydney and Brissy will mow down anything getting in their way

its a great city to get around on a bike. just be warned about tram tracks!!! especially in the wet, cross them at 90 degrees if possible. melbournes other advantage is its relatively flat and the winters are not too severe
