  1. ...complete. The 5 Spot, that is. I just have to put the rear brakes and the grips on.

I assume that the brakes will start working better once they've broken in? The Avid Juicys aren't
    stopping well in the garage.

Go find some sticky, silty mud. Don't have any? Get the garden hose out and make some! Just slather
that thick nasty stuff all over your rotors, ride around the block, brake on and off and modulated
and so on, slather more on, repeat. Then give them one good long downhill burn, and they'll be
pretty close to broken in, a lot quicker than normal riding would do it.

  3. When I popped my disc brake cherry I found this. Some mountain biking was the answer as it
transpired but I'm sure you've got that in hand.......

I cleaned my rotors really well with isopropanol (91%), then gave the pads a light touch of fine
emery cloth. I then took them out and broke them in like I would new brakes on a car (you can look
    up the technique through Google.)

Jon's advice is great, but around these parts, we gots too many pebbles in our dirt. And it was
winter, and the ground was frozen!
    🙂

The brakes I broke it were Avid mechanicals, BTW.

just point the darn thing downhill. What you lack in braking performance you'll more than make up
for in newly acquired skill based purely on survival instinct!
