Hello, Just wanted to tell you all how my triathlon went on Sunday. Thinking back it was an
absolutely epic experience and all your helpful tips contributed to my enjoyment, so I'd like to
thank you all.
The highlights:
Chugging water before the race because it was looking like a really hot day. Starting the swim - it
was pretty rough with people pulling me back etc. Puking up a bit in the water as I swam! Getting
lost on my bike (3-5min detour, don't ask how) Chain coming off the bike at the bottom of one of the
gradients. Intense stomach/diaphragm cramps at the start of the run due to liquid intake on the
bike. Stopping to go to the toilet on the run quickly! Finishing Taking about 25 minutes to recover.
Well after all that, and if I'm honest not that much training, I finished in 2h48m. Which I reckon
isn't bad for my first triathlon. I came second out the three guys that decided to do this in the
pub that afternoon, which isn't too bad going. If only I hadn't gotten lost! grr.
I'm planning next year's already. It was a great experience. Lessons I learned.
- Don't over-consume liquid when it's hot.
- You don't have to swim freestyle to do well. I did it mostly in breast stroke and finished
in 28 mins.
- Those powerbar energy gel things can mess up your stomach.
- That many triathletes appear to have 'all the gear and no idea' because I found myself beating
initimidating looking people that seemed kitted up to the eyeballs with all my borrowed
'part-timer' kit!
Thanks for your help, all of you.
Adam
