JOB SUMMARY:
Assumes primary responsibility for the direct supervision and training of all radiotherapists
relative to technical aspects of treatment and simulation, including operation of radiation therapy
equipment. Recruits, selects and evaluates personnel in conjunction with the Clinical Director,
schedules staff, assigns workload, and coordinates instruction of students in the clinical setting.
Acts as a role model, setting high standards and exceptional performance for Radiation Therapists.
This position also is responsible for assisting, when appropriate and necessary, in the delivery of
patient care.
JOB RESPONSIBILITES:
Supervisory Function
Plans, directs and supervises the activities of staff. Assures adequate staffing for delivery of
radiation therapy, including that required for peak volumes or staff shortages (secondary to
illness, vacations, or vacancies) in order to provide quality patient care and assure proper
efficiency and productivity relative to personnel and machine resources: Maintains daily work
schedule of therapists on simulator and treatment units, Maintains weekly call schedule of
therapists including holidays, Establishes therapists vacation schedule, Is responsible for
therapist timecards, Provides training of new personnel in Radiation Oncology, including the
orientation of Radiation Oncology fellows and residents regarding special pediatric treatment
techniques, Develops and oversees therapists' rotation and on-call assignments.
Participates in recruitment, selection, training and development of new staff: Selects and orients
new staff and provides on-going staff development, Determines the qualifications and competence of
radiotherapy personnel, Motivates, evaluates and communicates with employees, Evaluates employees
in an ongoing, thorough and timely manner, Coaches, counsels and administers disciplinary process
as needed.
Monitors and reports clinical progress of Radiation Therapy students in the work area: Provides
accurate and thorough instruction of students in the clinical area, Allows students to perform
procedures with direct supervision, Provides timely completion of student clinical evaluations,
Provides feedback to student if corrective action is needed, Ensures that a positive therapist /
student relationship is maintained.
Contributes to educational and public relations mission: Receives and processes employee and
patient/parent complaints. Communicates with patients/parents and visitors, Organizes in-service
training/education for Radiation Therapists, Develops and organizes on-going continuing education,
both within the Radiation Oncology department and to other departments as necessary.
Patient Care Function
Provides therapeutic radiation and related services to patients: Schedules patients to assure
maximum efficiency and productivity relative to personnel and machine resources, Ensures capture of
all appropriate treatment charges, Ensures accuracy of departmental statistics, Accurately simulates
and administers prescribed dosage to patients as required as a staff radiation therapist, Accurately
positions patient and applies appropriate auxiliary devices for immobilization, Records treatments
accurately. Makes changes / adjustments to ports as required by physicians, Performs portal
verification as required by physicians via manual or electronic methods, Reports patient progress
and observes patients for side effects or complications and reports same appropriately to nurse and
/ or physician including , but not limited to, weekly chart rounds, Performs block fabrication,
Performs dose calculations when needed, Assists with treatment planning studies (i.e. CT, MRI),
Communicates with nursing service relative to patient care.
Administrative Function
Acts as part of the management team of Radiation Oncology: Assists in the development of
departmental policies, Implements policies related to radiation therapists, Develops a system of
accountability regarding the development and implementation of procedure manuals related to
radiation oncology (including treatment, simulation, and planning related activities), Documents
radiotherapy functions (treatment, simulation) via manual or automated methods.
Follows and contributes to quality assurance programs and procedures: Performs quality control (warm-
up) as scheduled, Notifies proper personnel in case of equipment malfunction immediately to ensure
patient safety, Collects data as assigned, Identifies and reports potential problem areas as they
occur, Reports and documents incidents within the Radiation Oncology department immediately through
the proper channels, using proper forms as specified by departmental and / or hospital procedure,
Submits reports when requested, Follows recommended Federal, State and Institutional safety
procedures and guidelines.
Maintains appropriate treatment related equipment and supplies: Performs weekly inventory and
informs Radiation Oncology System Administrator of need to order when supply levels are low, Stocks
area with necessary supplies daily as needed, Assures cost effective utilization of supplies,
Maintains supply stores in an orderly manner. Maintains clean work area daily.
Performs or directs clerical duties associated with Radiotherapy: Ensures necessary clinical
information is included in patient radiotherapy chart, Ensures that simulation and portal films are
properly labeled, Ensures prescription information is complete before administration of
radiotherapy, Completes documentation of radiotherapy treatments both in patient record and daily
logbook or other methods, Retrieves / files radiotherapy films, charts, or paperwork as necessary,
Submits required radiotherapy data to the various funded cooperative cancer study groups.
General
Maintains professional demeanor and patient service orientation at all times. Adapts to department
change and works accordingly to uphold department philosophy via implementation of newly assigned
activities within reasonable time frames. Assists in other clinical areas as assigned by supervisor.
Works diligently to uphold philosophy of care. Actively participates by offering innovative ideas
for betterment of care or efficiency of technical operations. Assures day-to-day tasks are
accomplished in an organized, efficient manner. Maintains competence through attendance at mandatory
and other job related educational opportunities: Provides evidence of registration as a R.T. (T).
Maintains current standing in ARRT. Attends and participates in chart rounds. Performs other related
duties as assigned in order to meet the goals and objectives of the department and institution.
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING:
Graduate of JRCERT approved school. Bachelor's degree preferred.
EXPERIENCE: Three to five years experience as a staff radiation therapist in a large, progressive
Radiation Oncology department. Previous supervisory experience required.
LICENSURE, REGISTRATION AND/OR CERTIFICATION REQUIRED BY LAW: Registered through the American
Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiation Therapy. Certification in current
cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
SPECIAL SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES: Human Resource management skills, communication (both
written and verbal) skills, organizational, and motivational skills. Exceptional technical skills,
clinical knowledge, discretion, judgment, and ability to function independently. Knowledge of use
and care of computer-controlled therapeutic radiation equipment. Attention to detail, good judgment,
precision, accuracy, and professionalism. Ability to work harmoniously with patients and staff.
Capable to meet task orientated duties in any of the clinical assignments to include: Linear
accelerators, simulator, and mold room. Demonstrates a keen awareness of clinical situations and
utilizes appropriate judgment.
