It still pumps correctly on the downstroke, without any leaks,
but doesn't hold its pressure on the upstroke anymore.

Hello Michael
Your 1 way valve has become a 2 way valve at no charge whatsoever to
you :-)
AFAIK, All piston air pumps require a check valve or AKA 1 way valve.
Yours has either broken, (the spring or some other part) or has gotten
stuck due moisture & / or oil.
Clean it out as best U can & then pour rubbing alcohol in several times
to remove all moisture, & hopefully gunk. (Tobacco pipe cleaners are
sometimes helpful in this type situation.) Let it dry out. Then squirt
in some Tri Flo or Boeshield T9 & reassemble. If it still won't work,
then get replacement parts. (If you find that the spring is broken or
there is some other obvious problem, don't bother reassembling.)
U will not have lost any time cleaning & re-lubing it if it still
doesn't work, as all this is necessary prior to installing new parts
Good luck, John
