Hi all! I am building up my first mountain bike (I'm a roadie originally) and have some questions about sizing/buying the right components. I have the frame, but I'm not sure how to make certain I'm buying some of the right stuff. So...

    1. How do I measure for the bottom bracket? spindle length/width

    2. If I use XTR integrated shifters/brakes do I have to use a rapid rise rear derailleur or can I use normal action?

    Thanks a bunch!!

    hmm..

1 - measure the BB shell face to face, generally it'll be 68, 70 or 73mm, it might be slightly off from being faced either side and if that hasnt been done you should do it, esp. if its an external bearing bb. you also need a spindle width which sets your chainline, in general the middle chainring should be 47.5-50mm out from the center of the seat tube. it depends mainly on the cranks you have, if theyre new they should have a spindle length guide with them.

2 - rapid rise will work with any shifter so will a normal non rapid rise derallieur
