  1. I am 55 years old and in pretty good health. For the first
time in my life I am encountering (what I believe are)
kidney stones. I have not passed one yet, but I believe I
feel one is..."descending". I have soreness in that region.

I don't have the money to go to a doctor, right now. What
can I do for the pain? And is there any sort of lubricant or
something I can take to promote the passage of the stone? I
am straining my urine to collect the stone(s) when it
passes. I guess there are several varieties of kidney stone
    from different causes.

Drink lots and lots of fluids. You could take some alcohol
because that will inhibit the anti-diuretic hormone causing
you to pee more. Don't go overboard on the alcohol though.

Your diagnosis is suspect. Kidney stones don't cause
"soreness." They cause excruciating pain, so bad it makes
you vomit. The feeling is like if you just made the right
change in position, it would relieve the pain, so people
with kidney stones fidget and squirm (as opposed to people
with appendicitis who lie very still because movement
hurts). If you know any nurses, you might ask one to bring
you a urine dipstick to check for occult blood in your
urine. The presence of blood in combination with pain is a
good indication of a stone, but for a definitive diagnosis,
you need a spiral KUB CT scan.

Good luck. I hope you haven't got that rock.

  4. I had couple kindey stones episodes my self. As a
consequence I have ratholed some painkillers in cold
storage, for when I have attacks.Keep at least 30 Vicotins
handy, and a dozen or so 40 mg Oxycontin. When your sure
another is coming on --mine are about every 3 years apart--
time to start in on the Vicotin. Its addictive so be very
careful, and don't drink any alcohol for at least a week
before or after taking Vicodin. The Oxycontin is more
powerful but safer. It is constipating so have some good
laxative on hand when taking O.

When I feel the kidney stone descending, i have an extra
fine plastic catheter that I dose myself with. I'll still
have good urine flow. And, it's easier for a woman to
catheterize herself than for a man to do himself --esp with
a penis and a flaccid one in the length of the tube.

I take the catheter and put a reagent grade sterile
lubricant on it and carefully insert it in myself. Feeling
very carefully, I can sometimes bring it right up to the
stone. By now of course there is a drainage of urine.
Sometimes that alone brings the stone out, but sometimes I
apply a suction to the tube and I can feel the stone
snugging up to the the end of the catheter. I then very
gently haul it out of my urine canal. You have to have
patience with this method. I used to be an RN and so have
applied thousands of catheters to patients. The only one I
have tried to catheterize to aid in the passage of a kidney
    stone is myself.

If a kidney stone is situated where it can be reached with a
common catheter, it has already "passed." The severe pain of
a kidney stone is caused by obstruction of the ureter, the
tiny (about the size of a pencil lead) tube that goes from
the kidney to the bladder. When the stone exits the ureter
into the bladder, the pain is gone. The stone can then pass
out of the much larger urethra with little or no discomfort.
A catheter is not really useful in the self-treatment of
kidney stone, and risks the complication of urinary tract
    infection.
