i'm in the chicago area and fall is quickly approaching. i plan on riding outside until it gets about 45 degrees, so i've been looking online at knickers and tights.

if you could only buy one, would you buy knickers or full length tights?

Ideally you start with shorts, go to shorts plus knee warmers or knickers, then to shorts plus leg warmers, and finally to tights. For 45 degrees I would recommend an insulated tight but not over insulated. Something like the PI therma fleece tights as opposed to the AmFib. Also at 45 degrees keeping your feet warm is harder than keeping your legs warm, especially when rides stretch out beyond the three hour mark.

The amount of clothing required for cold weather is highly dependent on the person, though.
