There is a point where further research stops being preparation and starts being a distraction. No amount of digital planning removes all uncertainty, but there is a difference between curiosity and identifying high consequence unknowns. Spending hours on maps does not replace the need for a flexible plan that allows for revisions once you actually hit the road.
How can a planner recognize that a route is sufficiently understood to begin, even though no amount of research removes uncertainty?
