Hello I was thinking about Kwashiorkor Kwashiorkor is caused by a lack of protein but unlike
Marasmus there's no a lack of calories The World Health Organization states that is impossible to be
lacking in protein when you consume enough calories So, maybe it's the essential amino acids But
yet, neither this seems to be the cause Many studies on nitrogen balance show that it's easy to
maintain a nitrogen balance even when the solely source of protein is wheat or rice and that
addition of eggs or meat doesn't cause any difference in the way the nitrogen balance is maintained
It seems that those countries where people suffer from Kwashiorkor they eat almost only cereals
Cereals are said to be lacking in lysine because compared to the other essential amino acid lysine
amount is lesser Nevertheless, lysine in cereal like rice, oat, spelt is adequate according to the
RDA for essential amino acids and consuming an adequate amount of rice, oat, spelt and so on would
result in obtaining 230% of the RDA for each essential amino acid Interesting enough, even if corn
contains adequate amount of all essential amino acids it was impossible in those studies to be able
to maintain nitrogen balance with corn protein only, so there must be some unknown limiting factor
in corn Do people who in third world country who suffer from Kwashiorkor eat only corn ?
