What has gone wrong in cycling, like in Germany, since you retired?

LA: I think that when people follow anything, a bike race, or a company, or a band, or a family member... When they feel like that investment has not been returned, they are upset. I think that is what is going on with German cycling. They are turned off; they say, "That's it". It is a shame; there have been a lot of good German cyclists and events.

It has to move on, the Germans need to forgive and forget

He says all this without a hint of irony.

He is right in that people are upset in Germany because the riders they believed in came out as cheats, that's obvious. However people shouldn't just forget about everything and let it happen again. Maybe this is the only way to somehow try and stop the doping problem in cycling: cut the funding. If doping causes real problems to the riders not getting caught maybe they cease to silently support doping.

The thing the German race organisers have done however is IMO the wrong thing to do. They discontinue races because of doping busts so basically they are instead encouraging to keep things silent and make sure no one on the teams gets busted - not to stop doping. If they would be truly against doping they would halt the races well before any busts and wait until stronger anti-doping measures are put in place. So instead of punishing cycling for catching the cheats they should be encouraging testing and rewarding people for catching dopers.

Yeah but Lance tries to make out that its nothing to do with doping and everything to do with simple business logic.

If there's any one country where doping is the issue, then its Germany.
